Time Out!

Public holiday, bank holiday, jour férié; call it what you will, days off and long weekends such as the Easter break coming up this month can be a beacon on a worker's annual calendar. France has eleven official national holidays over the course of a year; although it'll effectively be ten this year as Ascension Day falls on the same day as Labour Day, 1 May!

Breaks and bridges

In some countries (notably the UK), public holidays that fall on a weekend are officially replaced by a day off the following Monday, but this is not the case in France.

In France, when a public holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, the odds are high that many smaller and family-run businesses will close on the Monday or Friday in a tradition called "making the bridge" (faire le pont), where the holidays are bridged by taking a day off to turn the period into a four-day break.

And if you want to make the most of the coming break, find out about special events in the region by browsing the What's On Guide.
